Artist Spotlight: Humberto Fernandez
Cuban born artist Humberto Fernandez lives and works in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Trained as a filmmaker at NYU Film School, he has enjoyed a successful career spanning over 30 years in the advertising industry as a Photographer/ Cinematographer. Three years ago, he met with a friend and fellow photographer who had taken a workshop at R&F. She had been experimenting with images using encaustic on wood.
“I was taken and just had to learn more. I saw the potential for collage, mixed media, and a new form of expression. I signed up and participated in a 3-day introductory workshop with Laura Moriarty. I learned the basics of working with encaustic on wooden panels. It was exciting! I actually walked away with a couple of new 8" x 10" pieces. I followed this with another 3-day workshop with Wayne Montecalvo. The support was great. Before the workshop Wayne printed a few of my images on 16" x 20" rice paper, ready to work with on the first day of the class.
I've recently set up a new studio in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where I'm now experimenting with R&F's oil-based Pigment Sticks and their translucent colors. I think the small class size, personal attention given, and the bright open studio instructors have to teach in is special. Really special."
