Paper Lithography with Encaustic and Pigment Sticks

Class Level: Beginner-Novice.

In this 2-day class students make mixed media work that combine encaustic painting with transferred imagery using Pigment Sticks. The transfer process used is called paper lithography. This simple printmaking technique uses a toner or laser printed image as the printing plate by adding a solution of water and gum Arabic to the surface. We replace traditional inks with Pigment Sticks giving participants a palette of 105 colors to play with. Instructor Leslie Giuliani will present the best techniques for successful layering of imagery over a waxed surface. Students are welcome to bring images of all varieties to test the bounds of this process, including drawings, illustrations and photographs. A toner printer is available for creating fresh plates. Participants will leave class able to continue this process as home without needing a press or other specialized equipment. All levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

Creative Ways with Wax and Traditional Collagraph

Class Level: Intermediate - Advanced

In this 4-day class, students will create two or more collagraph plates to be used with encaustic on panel. Students are encouraged to develop imagery that reflects personal artistic goals. Each will bring a selection of textural elements and small objects that may be glued to cardstock to create a plate, or may be pressed into "tacky" gesso to leave and impression. Heavy card stock may also be carved at varying depths to create plate imagery. Gessoed plates will be sealed so the plate can be used with wax.

Plate imagery will be off set into wax with options for inlay, R&F Pigment Stick, and graphite, to enhance the image. Multiple "printings" into wax, with layered imagery will also be explored. Students that have previously printed collagraphs on paper, or have other heavily embossed papers may bring them to use during the workshop. Methods for fixing and infusing these papers will be taught. This workshop is recommended for intermediate to advanced students with encaustic. Printmaking experience is not necessary.

Assemblage: New Narratives in Wax

Class Levels: Intermediate

In this three-day class, students will explore the idea of personal narrative through mixed media and assemblage constructions. Using encaustic as a unifying material, we will look at incorporating wax through collage, pouring, painting and simple sculpting techniques. Students are asked to consider their personal narrative ahead of class. We will use the first day to share ideas and look at corresponding materials to discuss compositional concepts. Our goal is to acquire a clear understanding of successful constructive methods for mixed media panels and the appropriate incorporation of wax as a design element. Students are encouraged to think of their panel compositions as telling a story. We will explore the option of working with panels in diptych and tryptic styles. Class Level: Intermediate - Advanced

This 3-day encaustic workshop is all about experimentation. Working with simple hand tools and excavational techniques, this class will focus on processes that parallel those found in the natural world, such as friction, embedding, heating and cooling, enfolding, fracturing, slippage, and erosion. With process as our metaphorical touchstone, we will take a hands on approach to a number of projects intended to lead to the discovery of curious cause and effect relationships. Participants can expect to come away from the workshop with a unique collection of both two and three dimensional objects. This class is best suited for intermediate to advanced students, with a desire to expand the horizons of both the materials and their own technical repertoire. Click the title above to read more.

This workshop is administered by Women's Studio Workshop, for more information on the WSW studio follow this link

Join R&F Handmade Paints in collaboration with Women's Studio Workshop as we create waxed handmade paper works. During the first two and a half days participants will work at the WSW paper making studio, using cotton, abaca, flax and Art Farm fibers exploring the basics of hand papermaking. We’ll create collages applying techniques of layering, embedding, translucency and opacity, stenciling, pulp painting, and embossing. After lunch on Wednesday we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints where we will use our paper work as starting points with encaustic. After Laura presents an introduction to basic encaustic techniques, students will create deeply layered pieces by working directly on the papers or mounting the sheets on panels.
