Wayne Montecalvo

Wayne Montecalvo is a multi-disciplinary artist whose wide-ranging works include mixed media prints, paintings, sculpture, video and collaborative street performance. Wayne received a BFA in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts.  His work has been widely exhibited and he has been Artist-in-Residence at the Frans Masereel Center in Belgium, the Vermont Studio Center, Women’s Studio Workshop and the John Michael Kohler Arts in Industry Program.  

I've always been interested in placing things within a new context. I use people in my work to investigate invented possibilities, and present something familiar within an unfamiliar setting or environment, or in a new light. I like to work with a person until they are no longer themselves, but become a character, or even a prop. Currently my work draws influence from photographic techniques, particularly glass plate photographs and negatives. Although I don't consider myself a photographer in the traditional sense, I am interested in the manipulation of a still image. I like the premise that photographs can lie. I am also very interested in the physical hands on approach that painting and printmaking can embrace beyond the digital process and beyond the chemical process that photography offers.
