ENCAUSTIC MEDIUM
Encaustic medium is an essential component to encaustic painting. Our medium is composed of 100% USP beeswax and damar resin. Medium can be used to create transparency and extend colors, as well as for mixed media and sculptural applications. It is available in 1 lb, 2 lb, 5 lb, and 10 lb bags, or in 333 ml cakes.
IMPASTO MODELING WAX
Our Impasto Modeling Wax is a blend of microcrystalline waxes and beeswax designed for sculptural purposes. It can be cast, carved, and layered to create a textural surface. The melting point (175°F, 79°C) is higher than that of encaustic (approximately 162°F, 72°C), which allows one to paint and fuse without immediately blunting sculptural details. Available in 333 ml cakes.
R&F PALETTE CUPS
Palette cups can be used to melt large amounts of paint at one time. They are excellent for keeping colors pure or for saving mixes. Our palette cups are made of a heavy aluminum and steel alloy. Large rectangular cups can hold one 104 ml cake and are offered in a handy 3-pack.
PALETTE THERMOMETER
This is an essential component of painting safely with encaustics. Perfect for reading the temperature of your encaustic palette or other heated surfaces. The surface thermometer has a temperature range of 50°-600° F.
HEAT GUN
The R&F heat gun is an integral part of your tool kit. It features two speeds and a variable temperature setting for versatility in heating the painting surface.
HEAT GUN NOZZLES
R&F makes two different kinds of heat gun nozzles. The fan nozzle and the reduction nozzle offer the user a wider range in terms of heat application.
R&F HAKE BRUSHES
R&F hake brushes feature a split shank with sewn in bristles for added durability. Each brush is made of soft goat hair, which won't scorch or melt. R&F hake brushes are ideal for creating smooth, even washes of color. They come in 1 1/2", 2 1/2", or 4" widths.
R&F ENCAUSTIC GESSO
R&F’s Encaustic Gesso provides an easy-to-use, water-based ground specifically formulated for use with encaustic paints. This gesso differs from typical acrylic gessos by having a higher proportion of solid to binder, making it absorbent while retaining the adhesive qualities of acrylic. It comes in 4 oz., 16 oz., 32 oz. or 128 oz. containers.
WHITE BEESWAX
Beeswax is the chief component of our encaustic paint. Our beeswax has been decolorized by mechanical filtration, rather than through bleaching which breaks the wax down. Filtering the wax is gentler process that makes it less reactive to pigments than chemical bleaching. The wax comes granulated so that it is easier to measure and to melt. It is available in 1 lb., 5 lb., and 10 lb. bags.
DAMAR RESIN
Damar is a hard natural resin that comes from a family of deciduous trees that grow in the East Indies. Damar resin is used to harden the beeswax and raise its melting temperature. Damar allows the wax to be buffed to a higher, more translucent surface and helps prevent blooming. It is available in 1 lb., 5 lb., and 10 lb. bags.
SOY WAX
Soy wax (actually partially hydrogenated soybean oil) is an excellent alternative to paraffin for cleaning brushes. Soy beans are a renewable resource, unlike paraffin, which is a petroleum product. Soy wax is non-toxic and naturally biodegradable. Soy wax is easy to remove. After the color has been cleaned out of your brush, the brush can be washed with soap and water, and used with other mediums. It is available in 1 lb., 5lb., or 10lb bags.
