PAST WORKSHOP / Encaustic Monotype and Beyond with Paula Roland / December 1-4 / Kingston

Our Visiting Artist Series was introduced into our educational program in 2009.  R&F invites some of the most exciting artists working with encaustic from across the country to come and present a workshop in our state-of-the-art studio facility.  These workshops are intended for experienced encaustic painters who are looking to add to their artist toolbox, or are interested in the practice of a specific guest artist.

In Encaustic Monotype and Beyond, we will explore the unique qualities of the encaustic (beeswax and pigment) monotype.  Direct and freeing, the fluid nature of the wax tends toward abstraction and leads to serendipitous, magical discoveries. Encaustic prints may be graphic or consist of richly layered surfaces of depth, translucency and blended color. No press is used. Encaustic in solid “crayon” form is applied to a heated metal plate. The molten encaustic may be manipulated with an assortment of tools and the image is transferred to paper by the gentle pressure of the hand.  The workshop is an in-depth introduction for those who are new to encaustic and provides a world of new options for those who have used the medium. Participants will find the process meditative and stimulating to the creative process. The instructor will encourage each person to find their own voice with the medium and help them become aware of the many additional avenues for exploration. Ample time is reserved daily for hands-on work and skill development. Numerous demonstrations and sample prints are provided. Guidance is given to help individuals strategize and reach goals. Because results are immediate, most artists complete many works in a short time. Contemporary and traditional methods of framing and presentation are covered. Participants will mount prints to wood and coat them with beeswax for additional depth, sheen, and protection. Other options discussed include artist’s books, installation art, multi-part prints, and sculptural approaches with prints. Also covered are health and safety concerns.  Participants need only basic knowledge of encaustic and do no need any experience with printmaking.
