Paper Lithography With Encaustic and Pigment Sticks

Class Level: Beginner-Novice.

In this class students make mixed media work that combine encaustic painting with transferred imagery using Pigment Sticks. The transfer process used is called paper lithography. This simple printmaking technique uses a toner or laser printed image as the printing plate by adding a solution of water and gum Arabic to the surface. We replace traditional inks with Pigment Sticks giving participants a palette of 105 colors to play with. Instructor Leslie Giuliani will present the best techniques for successful layering of imagery over a waxed surface. Students are welcome to bring images of all varieties to test the bounds of this process, including drawings, illustrations and photographs. A toner printer is available for creating fresh plates. Participants will leave class able to continue this process as home without needing a press or other specialized equipment. All levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

Modeled, Carved, & Cast: 3-D Encaustic

Class Level: Novice

Wax is an inviting and versatile sculpting material. In this four-day class, students will experience two methods for working with wax that will produce a series of objects. Our first approach will be creating a reusable mold out of silicone rubber to make wax castings. With the cast results from the mold, we will explore a variety of structural options including attaching objects in wax to other surfaces and attaching castings to one another. The second method we employ is working with an armature and looking at wax as a transformative material using paper and fabric. Soldering is a safe approachable way to a produce long lasting, strong support to create lightweight, airy work. Both methods can be used to create freestanding work or mounted pieces on panels.

To participate in this class please register by July 13th.

Join R&F Handmade Paints in collaboration with Women's Studio Workshop as we create waxed handmade paper works. During the first two and a half days participants will work at the WSW paper making studio, using cotton, abaca, flax and Art Farm fibers exploring the basics of hand papermaking. We’ll create collages applying techniques of layering, embedding, translucency and opacity, stenciling, pulp painting, and embossing. After lunch on Wednesday we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints where we will use our paper work as starting points with encaustic. After Laura presents an introduction to basic encaustic techniques, students will create deeply layered pieces by working directly on the papers or mounting the sheets on panels. We will be saturating, bending, burnishing, dipping, staining, transferring, drawing, and carving into these luscious materials.

The Materials of Color: Applying Color Theory to the Paint You are Using

Class Level: Appropriate for all experience levels.

The purpose of this workshop is to give an approach to color theory that differs from how it is usually presented in art schools. Instead of focusing on color relationships based on calibrated color sets, such as Color-Aid, we set those color relationships in the context of the actual materials of paint - the specific characteristics of pigments and mediums.

Working mainly with Pigment Sticks, we will examine how the characteristics of pigments - their opacity, temperature, saturation, and value - play crucial roles in color mixing and color composition. We also look at how different mediums, the absorbing properties of grounds, and how the diffusing nature of texture can either radically or subtly affect how a color interacts with light.

Encaustic and Paper

Class Levels: Beginner--Intermediate

Register before June 25th for our July class.

Receive a $35 materials credit if you sign up for the back to back October Encaustic & Paper and Paper Lithography classes.

Works on paper are reinvented in this 3 day multimedia workshop. In this class we explore the nuanced work that can be created from a variety of papers, both Western and Japanese, and encaustic. We begin with methods of dipping and saturating paper with encaustic making the work translucent and giving it the ultimate archival finish. Participants will see an immediate change in the characteristics of the paper, lightweight Japanese papers for example become incredibly translucent and luminous. You are encouraged to bring existing works on paper such as prints or drawings for dipping. Other techniques will include applying color using tinted medium and painting on a paper surface; Monotype and transfer options that will include working with Pigment Sticks; Collaging and basic folded book constructions. Laura also demonstrates how to mount drawings and prints on a panel to support working with thicker layers of wax. All experience levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

The Awagami Factory is supporting this workshop by generously providing a selection of papers for the students to work on.
