Mixed Media Encaustic: Fiber and Structure

Class Level: Novice

With an emphasis on mixed-media, this workshop is specially created to address the interests of artists working in fiber and fiber related techniques. This workshop will cover the basics of working in encaustic as well as techniques to enhance or create structure, texture, color mixing, layers, surface manipulation, and the creation of pattern using stencils, candy molds and tjaps. Working two or three dimensionally, participants are encouraged to develop a personal vocabulary and explore current content interests by combining the infinite possibilities of encaustic with fiber structures, surfaces and stitch. This class is ideal for the novice student, looking to expand their foundation.

 The following specific techniques will be presented in this workshop:

  • Rust printing/instant indigo painting on fabric & paper-repetition, pattern, instant indigo
  • Encaustic color mixing & application: transparency vs opacity, creating a textured application vs a smooth application, different brushes and their effects, use of white
  • Fusing: use of irons, heat guns, iwatani torch
  • Branding: repetition, layering, pattern, branding with torch vs tool
  • Covering a board with fabric
  • Stitching into wax using microcrystalline
  • Tjanting tools: creating line and repetition with tjanting tools
  • Collage with horsehair and shaped patterned papers: repetition, fusing with an iron
  • Surface texture & manipulation: creating a smooth surface, use of stencils, repetition, pattern
  • Incising: use of line, pattern
  • Solvy: creating thread grids, etc. on the sewing machine using water soluble stabilizer
